The Counter-Strike franchise boasts a legacy like no other. While the relentless pursuit of greatness drives today’s stars and rising talents, it’s worth pausing to reflect on the legends who’ve shaped the game. Across its storied history, a handful of names have transcended time, leaving clips, victories, and legacies in their wake.
Few players in the history of Counter-Strike have had as profound an impact on the role of AWPer as Kenny “kennyS” Schrub. Renowned for his lightning-quick reflexes, audacious flicks, and explosive gameplay, kennyS redefined what it meant to wield the AWP in Counter-Strike. Over the course of his career, he transitioned from a rising prodigy in Counter-Strike: Source to a global star in CS:GO. In this deep dive, we’ll explore his early days, his path to the peak of his fame, the triumphs and tribulations, and the legacy he leaves behind.
Early Life & Counter-Strike Beginnings
kennyS was born on 19 May 1995 in France. His journey into the world of Counter-Strike began very early in his life, when he discovered CS: Source thanks to watching his older brothers play. His elder brother, Cyril, once said, “We are ten years apart with Kenny. At eight years old, he was as good as we were.”
Even as a youngster, his proficiency with the AWP soon drew attention. CS:S offered plenty of scope for fast-paced, aggressive sniping, and kennyS’s innate ability to hit near-impossible shots and make aggressive, fast plays set him apart from his contemporaries. It wasn’t long before the new kid on the block was popping up on the radar of the French pro scene.
His initial forays in the professional world came with the French squad VeryGames. With a lineup featuring some of France’s most promising players, VG was a proving ground for up-and-coming talent during the later years of Counter-Strike: Source.
Whilst his initial tryouts with VG were a touch underwhelming, ending with a poor performance at PxL LAN #33, it wasn’t long before Kenny would be picked up by VeryGames. After a short stint on Team eXtensive, kennyS would be signed to VG following the departure of Micheal “mK” Zaidi. It quickly became clear that kennyS’s mechanical skill was exceptional. Opponents began to realize that they were witnessing the emergence of a truly special talent, but it would have been a stretch for them to comprehend just how influential Kenny would eventually become.
Transition To CS:GO
The release of CS:GO in 2012 was a defining moment for the Counter-Strike scene. While many players found the switch from CS:S or 1.6 to CS:GO challenging, kennyS adapted rapidly, perhaps even surprising himself. In fact, at the very beginning of CS:GO’s lifespan, Kenny was quoted as saying “Even Jérôme, my manager, was better than me” when the game was released.
Kenny’s raw aim and razor-sharp reflexes translated seamlessly into the new title. As he settled into the CS:GO environment, it became evident that he was destined to be one of the scene’s brightest stars.
kennyS’s standout performances continued to turn heads after he joined Titan in 2014. Although the team itself went through highs and lows, kennyS’s AWPing served as the squad’s linchpin. His playstyle was fearless – he’d take duels most players would shy away from, and his success rate was nothing short of staggering. When Titan lacked the firepower to close out rounds, it was often kennyS who stepped up, seemingly from nowhere, to clutch up in explosive style.
Dominance & Achievements
Between 2014 and 2015, kennyS reached a level of dominance seldom matched in the history of CS:GO. At times, it felt as though he carried entire matches on his back, pulling off rapid flicks and close-quarters AWP kills that defied logic. He popularized a brand of ultra-aggressive AWPing – rushing into angles, quick-scoping targets with unerring precision, then repositioning in the blink of an eye. It wasn’t long before commentators began to label the AWP as “kennyS’s gun.”
In early 2015, Valve introduced a patch often referred to as the “AWP nerf,” which slowed players significantly while scoped in. Many saw this as a direct response to kennyS’s dominance, as his relentless, high-paced sniping was warping the meta. Naturally, it posed an immediate challenge: kennyS’s signature style was under threat.
Nonetheless, KennyS refused to be defined by a single version of the weapon or a single patch. True to form, he adapted. Though his stats dipped temporarily, he soon proved that his skill wasn’t solely dependent on hyper-aggressive movement. His game sense, angle selection, and positioning shone through, showcasing a more measured, strategic approach to landing his trademark kills.
Later in 2015, a move to Team EnVyUs provided the perfect platform for kennyS to continue his evolution. Alongside fellow French stars such as NBK- and Happy, he finally claimed the Major title that had eluded him. At DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca 2015, EnVyUs bested Natus Vincere in the final, earning Kenny a coveted Major Champion title, and positioning him at the zenith of CS success. For kennyS, the tournament was the crowning achievement of years of dedication and sacrifice. His AWP was instrumental throughout, and the victory etched his name into the annals of Counter-Strike history.
Later Years & Continued Passion
Even after winning a Major, kennyS remained a pivotal figure on any of his teams. His time with G2 Esports in the latter stages of his career was marked by flashes of the same brilliance that had once dominated the entire scene. On good days, he still made the AWP dance to his tune, silencing critics who dared to question whether he could return to top form. On more difficult days, when the team struggled to find consistency, kennyS’s spirit remained unbroken – a testament to the passion that had propelled him to the apex of Counter-Strike in the first place.
His latter career was shaped not only by his flair in the server but also by his influence beyond it. Younger players have often cited him as an inspiration for picking up the Big Green, and his fans still remember his dominance with fondness.
Legacy
kennyS’s legacy transcends mere statistics. While there have been other formidable AWPers in Counter-Strike, few have captured the imagination of the community quite like he did. His highlight reels are legendary, filled with the kind of impossible-seeming shots that can turn the course of a match in a fraction of a second. Moreover, his willingness to adapt throughout the years – amid meta shifts, roster changes, and the inevitable scrutiny of being one of the game’s foremost superstars – speaks to his significant resilience.
kennyS formally announced his retirement on the stage at the BLAST Paris Major in 2023, receiving a standing ovation and rapturous applause. Whilst undoubtedly a bittersweet moment for the AWPing legend, it was a testament to the sheer amount of love the community has for him and his time on the server. Truly, KennyS is a legend of the game – so good, they had to nerf an entire weapon just to make things fair.
Of course, if you’re one of the many CS players inspired by kennyS and his playstyle, you can load into a Refrag server and use the Quickscope mode to practice flicking like the Frenchman. Until next time, happy grinding!
