What is a Crossfire? – CS2 Teamplay Fundamentals

It’s not impossible to be a one man army in Counter-Strike. You can, in theory, win the round all by yourself. However, many hands make light work, and maximizing your chances of winning requires teamwork. You’ll find yourself in many scenarios where positioning yourself properly makes losing the round almost impossible. In this blog post, we’re going to cover what a crossfire position is in CS2, and what scenarios you should apply them to.

What is a Crossfire?

A crossfire is when you and a teammate play different positions that cover the same angle. This is done typically in order to make it impossible for an enemy to check both positions at the same time, bolstering the defense.

Crossfire positions can be setups that are discussed in advance, or organized spontaneously. The example above on Anubis would be a crossfire that you discuss beforehand, while a crossfire done in an after-plant scenario for instance, would be more spontaneous.

Pros and Cons of playing a Crossfire

A crossfire is not the be-all-end-all of defensive positioning, in an after-plant or otherwise. There are other options, like bait setups, or playing for the individual. Here are some pros and cons of crossfire usage.

Pros

  • Good for CT defense of a bomb-site
  • Difficult for one player to break
  • Versatile positionally, can be done in many places

Cons

  • Can be broken up with utility usage
  • If played incorrectly, can be easily detrimental to both players
  • Can be difficult to organize, especially with strangers
